What to Expect from Your Driving Test

Driving Test Process

If you’re getting ready to take the U.K. driving test for the first time, you’re probably feeling a lot of nerves. In addition to taking practice driving tests, you should also have a general idea of how the test is laid out. This will ease some of your anxiety and help the process go smoothly.

Driving test theory and practice

Theory & Practical

The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is responsible for administering the driving test, which is broken into two sections. The first is the theory test which is meant to test your knowledge of road safety, rules, and regulations. After you’ve taken and passed the first section of the test, you can take the practical test. This section involves you actually getting on the road and proving your skills.

Practice and prepare to pass your driving test

Be Better Prepared

As long as you are at least 17 years old and already have your provisional license, you qualify to take the driving test. Although you are not required to have completed your driving lessons before you take your driving test, it is strongly recommended. You will be better prepared if you have real-life driving experience.

Taking Your Theory.

The theory test itself is broken into two segments. The first contains 50 multiple choice questions for automobile and motorcycle drivers or 100 questions for LGV and PCV drivers. Each question has four options, and only one of them is the correct answer. You will have 57 minutes (or 1 hour and 55 minutes if you are an LGV or PCV candidate) to answer each one. You may not skip any questions.

driving test theory exam.

The content of the theory test is meant to be a comprehensive overview of everything you should know to be a safe, skilled driver. The 50 questions are randomly generated from a bank of over 900 questions. No matter what 50 questions are in your test, you can expect them to cover topics like safety, adverse road conditions, traffic signs, accidents, and alertness.

After you’ve completed your theory test, you will get a three-minute break. The second portion of the theory test is called the hazard perception test. It consists of a series of sixty-second CGI video clips. Each video is meant to simulate when a hazard is present. You are supposed to indicate when you notice a hazard is developing. The hazard could pose a threat not only to you, but also to pedestrians or other drivers. This helps test your awareness and how you respond to when dangerous situations are present. You will have 20 minutes to complete this portion of the test, or 25 minutes if you’re taking the LGV or PCV test.

Passing Your Theory.

To pass the multiple-choice portion of your driving or motorcycle theory test, you must correctly answer at least 43 questions (86%). For an LGV or PCV theory test, you must get 85 of the questions correct (85%). For the hazard perception portion of the test, you’ll need to correctly answer 44 out of 75 for cars or motorcycles, and 67 out of 100 for LGV and PCV hazard perception test.

Pass driving test theory

PASS

The good news is you won’t have to wait very long to know if you passed. You should find out in just 10 minutes. If you passed your exam, you will receive a test theory certificate. Make sure you hold onto this as you’ll need it for your practical driving exam. The certificate is valid for two years, so you must take your practical test within that time frame. Otherwise, you will have to take your theory test again. If you do end up losing your certificate, you should be able to find your certificate number by going to the government website. All you have to do is enter your driving license number.

If, on the other hand, you weren’t able to pass your test on the first try, you aren’t alone. You can try again after waiting just three working days. However, you may want to wait longer so that you can spend more time reviewing the material and even taking a practice driving test.

Taking Your Practical Driving Test.

After you’ve passed your theory test, you can take your practical driving test. A DVSA examiner will accompany you for this test and guide you through a pre-determined route. They will document the mistakes you make in three categories: driving faults, serious faults, and dangerous faults. You must make it through the route without any serious or dangerous faults to pass. You must also have less than 15 faults total.

Maximise Your Chances of Passing

Sitting for your driving test takes time, but it also takes money. Both the theory and the practical test will cost you, and you’ll have to pay more if you’re taking the test on an evening or weekend, which may be the only times that work with your schedule. Only about half of people who take their driving test pass. Because of this, you could use all the help you can get going into this test!

Preparing for your Theory

It’s fairly easy to study up for your theory test. You should review the official highway code and U.K. street signs. Because there are over 900 potential questions, the more you study, the better off you’ll be. You should be able to prepare for the hazard perception test by looking up video clips of hazard perceptions.

Preparing for the Practical Driving Exam

It’s harder to emulate the circumstances of a practical driving test especially because you won’t be told in advance what driving route you’ll be taking. There are over 150 testing centres, and one has multiple possible routes you could be asked to drive.

The idea of not knowing what route you’re driving can be extremely overwhelming. This can create test anxiety, which doesn’t set you up for success when the stakes are already high. That’s why we created U.K. Driving Test Routes! This solution allows you to download driving test routes ahead of your practical driving exams. You will receive the routes based on what centre you plan on going to.

When you’ve already had the chance to familiarise yourself with all the possible routes, you will feel much more prepared and confident going into your practical test. You’ll be able to get used to the speed limit, driving conditions, junctions and test manoeuvres.

We’ve created our technology to be easily accessible. You can use our driving test routes on Apple, Android, Garmin, and TomTom devices. You can also select Google Maps as your preferred app when using your driving test routes.
